After Native Americans were moved to reservations and out of the public eye, demand for Native art objects grew. In the early 1900s, many white Americans believed that Native cultures were becoming extinct. Today, we know that was not the case.
Many Native Nations continue to embrace the tourist trade to support their communities. Some items created for the tourist trade are mass produced and machine stitched. However, other objects, particularly those created for personal use, are still hand sewn.
