Dewey Beard (1856-1955) was involved in the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876 and was one of the only survivors of the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890. Hard times and crop failures led him to join the Ghost Dance.
Beard lost his entire family in the Wounded
Knee Massacre. At the end of his life, the Federal Government took his land on the Pine Ridge Reservation to construct a gunnery range. While he faced adversity, he remained proud and shared his stories with all who listened,
including A.T. Newman.
